What you see here is the result of an accident. I was spinning away with the rest of the mahogany fiber. I was very eager to have it done so I could try my hands at Navajo plying. Did I lose concentration? Too rushed? I dropped the spindle. The singles popped off the spindle a third of the way. Yuck! I can't slide it back up. I can't continue to spin with it. I guess I'll have to take it off and ply with what I have. Will I have a tangled mess? Ugh!
Note to self: must get "yarn stopper". I have to get a bag of rubber bands.

Dear Jason,
Screwed up the comment. You have my sympathy! I think if you remove it from the spindle it will tangle up quickly because there is already twist in the single you spun. If you try to push it back onto the spindle, you may still be able to ply from part of it! Good Luck!
OUCH !!
I've not had something like that happen to me. I think what I'd do is find something you can use as a nostepinde (google it, hon) and wind as much off the copp as you can onto the nostie for storage. You could use the handle of a wooden spoon, or the cardboard from a roll of paper towel or toilet paper. It'll hold it under tension so it won't twist back on itself. Then you can easily navaho ply from that using the end from the outside of the ball. (I do, for making distaffs.)
Oh no! No advice, just sympathy!! :(
Oh, so I'm not the only one that has had that same exact problem. When that happened to me, I CAREFULLY wound it onto my yarn winder to make a cake out of it, and plyed it from there. I say carefully because it's going to want to twist around on itself, so you'll have to work out the kinks. It CAN be saved. Good luck.
OOOH man, I'm so sorry.
Yikes. The colours are so drool worthy. Good luck (I'm thinking you'll pull this one off.)
Great looking yarn...not-so-great looking accident! But I'm sure that with a little patience you'll be able to salvage it. Good luck!
Thank you all for the pointers, the sympathy and the good words. :-) All is well. :-)
There is an old saying about watching a young girl untangle a mess of yarn worse than that, to see how impatient or angry she gets. A sign of the kind of wife she will become!!
I started using a quill on my spindle. I wrap a short sheet of paper around the spindle shaft before starting to spin. I wind the yarn around over the quill making a cop with a little paper showing on either side. Then if it should slide off when I drop the spindle (I've never done that!) or when I am finished, I simply slide it off, and put it on the lazy kate, and away I go. Less handling of the singles, since I have better things to do!
